This article was written for NetProfessional Magazine in 1999, and lists all the major features found in list server software, as well as the problems they attempt to solve. The article compares the major products to explain how each approaches these issues. In 1999, when I wrote the article, ListProc was still a significant force in list servers. Since then, they have mostly withered, so that a "big 3" have evolved: Majordomo, LISTSERV and Lyris ListManager. A number of open source list servers have been introduced, such as MailMan, and while these are interesting products, none that I have reviewed has the breadth of features that classic list servers have, nor are do any of the new offerings have a significant market share. Here is an Adobe Acrobat version of the article. This article is also available online at the Lyris web site.
