These pictures are taken on April 13, 1999 as I walked downtown toward The Museum of Contemporary Art.

Downtown Los Angeles is filled with impressive modern skyscrapers. There are not many people walking on the streets, even during the middle of the day, which makes me wonder if anyone is actually in these buildings. But, those doubts were cast aside when I saw the huge traffic jam at 5 p.m., which proved that there indeed were people here!

Near the hotel was this wonderful courtyard where people were eating lunch. On the courtyard was a school of fashion and merchandising.

Ciudad: an excellent restaurant

Friday night (March 16, 1999), after we had packed up the booth and were ready to drop over dead from exhaustion, we decided to go out to eat to celebrate a successful week! We went to a new restaurant downtown called "Ciudad", located at 445 South Figueroa street (tel: 213/486-5171). It is a Latin American restaurant, with a strong bent for flavorful dishes (lots of seafood) with very bright flavors. For example, we had a shrimp and scallop ceviche which had chunks of green papaya mixed with a coconut milk sauce. Another dish was a grilled salmon completely coated with dill seed so that it was very crunchy, on a bed of some sort of rice-like grain and a spicy cabbage puree. The restaurant was clearly very popular as we were lucky to get a table: I would recommend a reservation to anyone visiting.

Next to the restaurant was this fountain, and a passerby volunteered to take a photograph of Marlene (then head of sales at Lyris Tech) and I in front of it.
