Running a Company

Most of my time in 1996 to 1998 is spent writing Lyris, our next-generation mailing list server. Click here for more information. After about a year of shaking out bugs, when we release Lyris version 2.1, Lyris begins to do quite well. After about two years, it has done so well that we have a real company now, with nine employees, an office, a computer data center located at the Pacific Bell building in downtown Oakland, and we're doing well!

In spring of 1998, since Lyris was doing so well, I decided to write an anti - Spam program called MailShield using most of the same technology that is in Lyris (reusing the email sending and receiving engine, as well as the scripting language).

A year later, in spring of 1999, I am currently working on several new projects along with the other programmers who work with me. We are working on an SQL version of Lyris, a Linux version of Lyris, a new major version of Lyris (version 3.5, and also v4), and a new product: an SQL backed mail server called Performance Mail.

I forgot to mention that I'm quite interested in music, play guitar and bass, and have a decent MIDI studio. A collection of my sound recordings is available.

I have to admit, however, that Jan Hanford, the woman of my life (girlfriend of five years until spring of 1999, when we married), is a much better musician (and Web designer) than I. She has a CD that has gone into a second pressing and will likely go out into a third pressing (this is in spring of 1999)! Most the web pages that Jan and I have done are available at the domain Redmood.com.

That's my life thus far!
