Lyris is an email list server that I began to write after moving to California from Maryland in 1996. I took a year-long sabbatical from other work in order to write the first version. After having written InfoMagnet, I believed that the future of list managed was with good server software and a web gui (i.e.: what I did with Lyris ListManager), rather than trying to put a desktop program (InfoMagnet) on an aging, hard-to-use server (LISTSERV).

After about three years (when I am writing these words, at the end of 1999), Lyris ListManager has been extremely successful and is used at about 1000 hosts on the Internet (almost as many as the freeware Majordomo program, which is the market share leader, but Lyris is now the market leader in commercial list servers).

In the year 2000, we changed the name of the company to "Lyris", and the product name to "Lyris ListManager", so that we could release other products in the "Lyris" category.

Now, in 2001, Lyris ListManager is the most popular commercial list server, by a wide margin, with 2500 servers on the planet using it. Recent improvements include an SQL-based version, integration with the Apache web server, a brand new super-fast mail engine, and lots more
